Create fun twisty hemp covers for your pot plants.

Simple crocheted covers made with organic, fair trade twine give basic pots an appealing natural look. You can easily adjust this pattern to fit various pot sizes by changing the number of stitches you use. Don’t worry too much about your tension, twine has a twisty way of its own that adds to the pot cover’s character.

You will need

• Variegated or natural fair trade organic hemp twine, from Trade Aid. One ball makes approximately one 14cm x 13cm pot cover and one small hanging pot

• 8mm crochet hook

Method

Round 1 – Create pot cover base: Chain 4, slip stitch into the first chain, to create a loop to begin your base. Chain 3. This counts as your first double crochet. Yarn over, insert your hook into the very centre of the loop. Yarn over and pull through. You’ll have 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over pull through 2, yarn over and pull through 2. This is your first double crochet.

We are now going to continue our double crochet stitch to make a full circle. Crochet a round of approximately 14 double crochets, continuing to insert your hook into the centre of the loop. Once you have 14 double crochets to complete a full circle, insert your hook into the top of the chain 3, slip stitch to join. This creates the base to cover the bottom of our pot.

Round 2 – Start pot cover sides: Chain 3, yarn over, double crochet into every top stitch in your circle of 14. Once you’ve completed your round of double crochets, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join.

Round 3 – Shape pot cover sides: Chain 3, yarn over, double crochet into the first 12 top stitches in your round.

Now we’re going to do a double crochet increase, by inserting 2 x double crochet into a single top stitch. Yarn over your hook, enter your hook into the next top stitch, yarn over and pull though the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook, then yarn over and pull through the last two loops on your hook. Yarn over your hook, enter your hook into the same top stitch as before, yarn over and pull though the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook, then yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on your hook.

Complete your last double crochet into the next top stitch to finish the row. Slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join.

Round 4-5 – Add height as needed: Put your pot inside the cover to check for size. For the final 2 rounds (or until the cover is at the desired height), repeat the instructions from round 3.

Cast o – Fasten off : Weave in the ends.

Extra strap for hanging pot: Create a chain of around 20 stitches. Turn your work. Skip 2 stitches (to create an eyelet), then working your way back down the chain, single crochet into every loop, until there are 4 stitches left. Skip 2 (to create another eyelet), then single crochet into the last 2 stitches. Finish by using eyelets to attach strap to pot cover.
