Some like it hot, some like it cold. This homemade chocolate drink recipe can be made both ways and is delicious as well as nutritious.
Homemade Hot (or Cold) Chocolate Drink
My kids spent their youth drinking hot chocolates – or “flu ies” if we went to cafes. The flu ies are milk foam with chocolate sprinkled on top with two marshmallows. It’s always a fun burst of sugar and a treat. But this hot chocolate is more for grown-ups who seriously love a hot, rich chocolatey drink! Serves 1
4 pieces of dark chocolate
(I use Whittaker’s Dark Ghana 72%) ¼ cup cream
¾ cup oat milk
½ tablespoon cacao powder pinch sea salt ¼ teaspoon each ground cardamom, ground
cinnamon and vanilla bean powder can whipped cream, optional
Place the chocolate in a bain-marie (i.e., a glass bowl balanced above a saucepan that has 2cm of water in the bottom, over a low heat). Melt the chocolate in the bain-marie – I do it this way, so the chocolate doesn’t burn – and once melted, slowly add the cream, whisking constantly.
Whisk in the milk, cacao, salt, spices and vanilla, then pour into a cup and devour. Add whipped cream on top for an extra indulgent topping. This is seriously yum served chilled, too, and then the whipped cream holds on top nicely. Enjoy!
