Ingestible Beauty

The benefits of feeding your skin from the inside out and top supplements to try.

Words Carolyn Enting

It’s universally acknowledged that if you eat well and keep hydrated, good skin will follow. Nourishing yourself from the inside out is the ideal, but if you struggle to eat a balanced diet or your skin could do with an extra boost, “ingestible beauty” supplements – that you can eat, drink and swallow – can lend a helping hand.

The supplements often contain plant extracts, collagen, vitamins, minerals and probiotics, but as the industry grows so does misinformation – so do your research and go for products that are based on sound scientific research and studies, in order to reap the stated benefits.

That’s one of the reasons Pro You co-founder Anna Thompson-Ford has produced a series of White Papers about what Pro You supplements aim to do, how they support wellbeing, and why they include specific ingredients.

“The White Papers are independently written and the focus is on science, education and information,” says Thompson-Ford.

Pro You is one of the standout marine collagen beauty supplements in the ingestible beauty space and contains a blend of premium marine collagen, New Zealand-sourced astaxanthin and essential vitamins and minerals.

Research on Marine Verisol F Bioactive Collagen Peptides, which Pro You uses, has shown a range of proven results over 10 years with nearly 500 study participants. It increases skin elasticity and collagen content, hair thickness, nail health and growth and reduces eye wrinkles and even cellulite.

Across the ditch, Carla Oates, founder of The Beauty Chef, has created what is believed to be the world’s first living, bio-fermented, probiotic inner beauty product GLOW. She was seeking to solve her own skin and health issues, which led to her lacto-fermenting foods in her kitchen. GLOW contains 24 bio-fermented, skin-loving superfoods.

“Studies show that where there is gut inflammation, there will be skin inflammation and that people who have a healthier gut microbiota often have a healthier fatty acid profile in their skin

– meaning their skin is more moisturised, hydrated and protected from within,” says Oates.

Fellow Aussie Keira Rumble, founder of

Krumbled Foods, was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in her early 20s, which forced her to change what she was eating. She struggled to find a healthy alternative to the protein bars she loved, which she discovered were filled with hidden sugars or made with dates. Sugar is also not great for skin!

During her research, working with nutritionists and food scientists, Rumble discovered that if you have a high sugar product with collagen, the body will favour the absorption of sugar, which is another reason why her revolutionary Beauty Bites don’t contain dates or refined sugar.

“A lot of collagen bars contain dates, which are really high in sugar and the body absorbs the sugar first so you’re essentially getting none of the good stu ,” she explains.

At the time, Rumble was also taking collagen, seeing results in her hair, skin and nails, as well as taking probiotics for her gut health. She was inspired to combine them in an all-in-one snack to save time on her morning routine.

The result is Beauty Bites, a functional collagen snack sweetened by stevia and monk fruit that also contains prebiotics, probiotics and vitamins C and E.

So should we start skipping our topical skincare in favour of ingestibles?

The answer is no. Both will work synergistically to level up your skin.
